GreenSurf Nicaragua Wave Chart
An asterisk denotes that this surf spot IS covered in our local surf zone and 4 x 4 transportation is included in the price of your Simple Green or Aqua Green tour. Please refer to the Green Rates page for more information and details regarding the Simple Green or Aqua Green tour. The *asterisk indicates that this spot is either walkable from the private GSN base or we will drive you there upon request or when we know that particular spot will be working. Most spots are extremely tidal and your GSN tour guide, Jon Ocanto, will make sure you are in the best spot at the right time. You can read more about Jon on our website. Any other surf spot outside of the GSN surf zone (no *asterisk) will be considered an available add on destination or a destination in special packages.
Below are descriptions of SOME of the breaks we surf on a regular basis. In addition to the breaks described below, we also provide service to more popular (crowded) surrounding breaks such as:
Puerto Sandino
Punta San Diego (referred to as Hemmies or Meatgrinders featured on Feb 2010 Surfing cover)
Las Penitas / Poneloya (Leon region)
Playa Colorado / Panga Drops and other breaks in the Tola region.
Remember these breaks are further from the GSN base so they are considered optional add on destinations. Take a look at some of the surfing adventure packages below or email us for a fully customized package based on your special needs.
* Outback GSN
Two separate high tide/low tide reef/rock combos, mostly mellow lefts, but some fun rights on the right swell, accepts most swell directions, waste to 1’ overhead. Low tide reef is a short to medium left, rippable wall, beautiful, often translucent water over the reef. A-frames and/or rights on certain swells. Occasional almond shaped barrel on the peak. Located outback within our small, private beachfront community. No crowd factor. 250+ days offshore, Intermediate +. Good wave to knock the rust off, warm up or cool down on. Breaks off and on year round somewhat consistent. Likes medium/long period SW and other swells.
* GSN Overhead spot
Overhead to DOH +. Mostly lefts with a rare right. Turns on and off in 4 hrs….loves super long period swells from the right direction and the bigger the better. Best at 2’ overhead to DOH +. Sand / reef / rock combo. LONG barreling left with multiple peaks. Intermediate to Advanced. Advanced only when DOH +. Deep water take off to very shallow sand / reef / rock combo on the inside, if you can make it that far. Sometimes dry reef on the last inside barrel. Shows up somewhere near the GSN base camp on certain swells. Not an easy wave, fast with multiple barrel sections & challenging. Does not break much but we know when it does. Bring your step up or even the pipe gun when its DOH +. Possibility for gigantic, heaving barrels is high when it’s working. Offshore 250+ days. March to October…best on early/late season larger long period swells. No crowd factor whatsoever and thanks to permission from our gracious Nicaraguan friends, exclusive 4 x 4 access for GSN clients.
* MiniRio
Turns on and off in an instant…typically a 3 to 4 hr window. If you are there when it’s on it can be a very fun, A-framing cylinder that can slot most surfers with only a chest high wave. Short, fast and very shallow in spots. Best at waste to slightly overhead. Intermediate to advanced, sand bottom. Within walking distance. Full tour guests will be introduced to this spot via 4 x 4 when we know it’s working or you are welcome to explore on your own. Great spot to horseback ride to from the camp. A few different peaks in a private community. Nice set up next to the small river, pretty beach with lots of cool little shells & no crowd factor. Nice offseason spot after rainy season ends. October to March, Offshore 250 days +
* Blacks
Sand / Rock / Reef combo, likes super long periods and certain tide conditions so a little inconsistent. We know when to be there. Medium/Long powerful lefts with some rights. Rippable walls and barrel sections depending on swell. 3 distinct peaks in the right conditions. Offshore 250+ days. March to October…best on early/late season at chest to 3’ overhead +. Located in a pristine, private beach. Never a crowd factor and thanks to permission from our gracious Nicaraguan friends, exclusive 4 x 4 access for GSN clients so we can spot check it and cool down in between sesh with a cold water under the tiki. The security guard will watch your stuff and cheer for your barrel.
* BLTs
The beach break outback at the GSN Lodge, our sister camp, located at a quaint fishing village a 20 min drive from the GSN base camp. BLTs loves the off season’s smaller medium period and background swells in season from waste to about slightly overhead. The beach shuts down on long period swells that are well overhead or larger. Breaks year round off and on best from November to April or May with the more consistent offshore winds. All skill levels. Mostly mellow wave but on some days with the right conditions, BLTs can be a little heavy right before it maxes out. Good on most tides (best incoming) as the waves and peaks change along with the tide, we’ll make sure you’re in at the right time. Multiple peaks, barrel sections and can handle a little crowd although we rarely see more than 5 people out. Nice little town also to check out some culture, buy some fish/lobster and support our friends that we live among.
* Pistols
Secret cove about 100 yards wide that boomerangs a left and a right wedge off opposing rocks aimed right at each other and then the occasional a-frame in the middle. Nice punchy wave that barrels at the right tide and best from waste to slightly overhead. This wave breaks fairly close to the beach with a nice channel to paddle into so it’s a nice, short paddle out. There are lots of barrels here with a mostly sand bottom. Notice the rights. This spot is a nice off season choice.
* La Brazilia / La Jamaicana
2 breaks, 1 beach…Point and beach break combo in a nearby fishing village. Short drive from GSN base. Fairly consistent year round, holds small to well overhead swells from most directions and breaks at all tides. High tide left point / low tide beach / reef combo. Great all day surfing beach. Accepts most swell directions. Becoming more well known but you can still surf here relatively uncrowded with typically 10 or less in the lineup. Less crowd in the offseason but surf camps are popping up in this area. Get it while it’s empty. Holds waste to well overhead and can be one of the better beaches to get in the barrel. Intermediate to Advanced Offshore 250+ days.
Ernestos Place
Waste high to 2’ overhead, breaks on most tides, sand bottom, lefts, rights, barreling beach break, multiple peaks on a wide stretch of pristine beach in a tiny fishing village. No crowd factor. Shallow low tide sand bar to rippable waves at high tide. Accepts most swell directions Offshore winds 250 + days. Good when it’s flat other places. Intermediate to advanced when it’s bigger. Approx 1.5 hr via 4 x 4 from GSN base. Best from mid to late October to March.
LBs
Sand bottom rivermouth with multiple peaks and fun A frame inside barrels, chest to well overhead, 275 days+ offshore…cant tell you more than that. Well worth the 2.5 hr drive when it is working. Other peaks up and down the beach. 10 or less in the water with a few friendly locals. Great all day destination.
