While we are waiting for the next swell to hit El Transito we decided to go on a trip into the northern highlands of Nicaragua. The first stop on this expedition was Esteli. Although this former Sandinista stronghold is worth your time to stay longer and visit the surrounding coffee farms and cigar factories, we left early morning for our final destination – Somoto and the close by canyon. Only discovered in 2003 and is now open for adventurous tours: hiking, jumping, diving and floating down the canyon and the Coco River. If you’re in Nicaragua this is a beautiful area for a stop-over on your way down to the coast.
