Contrary to popular belief, Nicaragua is actually the safest country in all of Central America. The Nicas are among the friendliest and most hospitable people in the world. It may even take a little adjustment for the unknowing traveler!

The INCAE, which is the Harvard Business school affiliate in Nicaragua states that Nicaragua is the safest country in all of Central America. The two colonial cities, Leon and Granada, remain the two safest and most beautiful cities in the country. Furthermore, a statistical observation of police forces in the Americas and the Inter-American Institute on Human Rights supports this claim and rates Managua as the safest capital in the region with Nicaragua boasting as the safest country in Central America. The same reports state that Nicaragua remains among the safest countries in the entire world. There have also been recent studies to support these claims that refer to the low reported crime rate in Nicaragua. In comparison, the crime rate is lower in Nicaragua than Germany, France or the U.S.

The September 2003 issue of International Living Magazine rated Nicaragua as one of the top ten most attractive countries for retirement largely based on the high personal safety index, low costs of living and real estate in the country.
