GreenSurf Nicaragua is located in a seldom frequented stretch of beach called Playa Hermosa. It is a small residential development mostly utilized as a vacation destination by the property owners. The closest town or pueblo is ´´el barrio´´ El Velero, a 5 to 10 minute drive (if it has not rained too much). 15 minutes drive north are located the surf breaks in Miramar and Puerto Sandino — and 15 minutes to the south lies El Transito, with small swell options. Playa Hermosa boasts a few different rock / reef breaks that maintain cleaner and more organized waves for the intermediate to advanced surfer who wants a quality setup of waves that is ´´middle of the road´´, however, outstanding in the fact that aside from the staff and guests of GSN, the waves here are very rarely surfed. The beach is a dream locale for the soul surfer – longboard heaven and SUP Utopia. In front of the GreenSurf facilities there is a wave that breaks typically with lower tides and is better on smaller to medium swells – knee to head high. We usually just call it ´THE REEF´. On a nice low tide and medium S to SW swell, this spot can be sufficiently fun for a variety of surfers. The first inside peak, on a lower tide, can deliver a mellow tear drop barrel from the take off…and then room for several turns, with a vertical section or 2. There is a 2nd and 3rd peak for take-off that can spread out a lineup. Memorable sessions here lasting 3 to 5 hours are not uncommon. The wave has medium speed and typically stays walled up, so it fits the style of a good variety of surfers and boards. Hazards are minimal for the semi-experienced surfer with the reef being made up of round rock and volcanic formations with live vegetation providing a softer landing, should you ´´get to know the bottom´´. Average wave length 25 to 75 meters. Unless the tide is uncommonly low, it is hard to touch the bottom – without actually trying to. The best waves here usually break left, but occasionally a more W or NW swell can deliver fun rights here. Within 10 minutes walk are at least 2 or 3 other mid to high tide options. KIDDIE POOLS is a series of 3 or more waves along a short stretch of coastline – sometimes up to 5 different peaks that turn on during the fuller tides. The first peak of the high tide series produces a mellow A frame that works best from waist/chest high to up to 2 or 3 feet overhead – it can be REALLY good on a consistent head-high to overhead swell and perfect for beginners, longboarders, SUPs with a channel to the lineup. The right curves around a slight elbow in the coastline – room for a super easy entry, a few long drawn-out turns that lead to a faster, shallower inside section with, at times, a quick barrel opportunity approaching the beach. 50 to 100 meter rides on average. The left is the first section of reef that begins a series of lefts that work at the mid to higher tides, with walled-up 75 to 150 meter lefts being common that can handle size up to well overhead. Most of the better waves are lefts, but you can find some rights when the conditions are right. Finally, THE LOUVRE @ LOS PLAYONES is a left point break just a short and pleasant walk from the center of Playa Hermosa filled with pleasant scenery and other tempting waves that turn on and off with the tides. Because of limited access and rock hazards, the wave is seldom ridden, breaking over a medium-sized lava rock reef with average 100 to 150 meter lefts. For upper intermediates to professional level on head high plus swells. On smaller days and fuller tides, the intermediates can enjoy this wave with a good guide and maybe some reef booties. If you got caught inside the take-off zone on a consistent overhead day, there are good chances you will tango with some rocks….and some are gnarly. So it makes for sick photos! The wave provides 2 short, but sometimes epic, barrel sections, following with opportunities for cutbacks, snaps, airs….when the wave runs the entire reef, average 6 to 8 maneuvers. And with it still unknown….an insanely fun wave to practice on, especially if you love to go left. Crowd is still a non-factor. When the waves are well overhead to double overhead or larger, the waves in PH will begin to shut down, but there is a walkable option within 30 minutes that handles XL size. For the explorers at heart, there are a few juicy reasons to pack a backpack, your daybag and spend half the day feeding your curiosity. The coastline to the north and south of our location is spectacular – with hidden tide pools, live reef patches and a few waves that are not listed on the internet. There are even more wave options available via water or land transport. We have prepackaged surf adventures available for those of you who want to maximize your Nicaraguan experience. Our location is a good indicator for when other surf spots to the north and south are working. There are no bars or restaurants and still not much tourist traffic in Playa Hermosa. Because the closest town is a few kilometers away, plan ahead if you want to drink or party as the natural atmosphere here is as ”tranquilo” as you can imagine.
